Abstract

The expansive convergence of IP and Telecommunications networks has highlighted the need for improved levels of QoS and Security over the new integrated network. It can be argued that computer communications networks today offer the highest potential degree of flexibility to meet the different requirements for the currently emerging applications, and therefore offer the best available technology on which the global telecommunications infrastructure could rely. The Internet is the uncontested prime candidate to form the core of this global infrastructure. Thus, a major part of convergence is the migration of existing telecommunications services to Internet Protocol (IP) platfo rms. Indeed, this is already happening, evidenced by the recent dramatic growth in Internet Telephony. The TSR Strand III funded Converge project is currently researching various solutions that claim to support the provision of IP QoS and Security in order to facilitate this service migration. This paper provides an interim report on the evaluation of a mixed IETF ISSLL IntServ and DiffServ architecture while also investigating security improvements through the use of various Authentication and encryption techniques.
