Abstract

A qualitative research study of children's experiences of living with domestic violence and their experiences of the service responses they recieved. This report was commissioned by the Office of the Minister for Children and presents the findings of 61 qualitative interviews with a sample of 22 children, (including children as young as 5), 19 mothers and 20 key professionals. The report provides considerable detail of (1) the kinds of violent households children live in and (2) how state and voluntary services respond to the adversity experienced by such children. The authors sought to place children at the centre of the research by accessing their narratives on how they had witnessed domestic violence and what they themselves had to say about service responses. The report shows that children are well able to articulate their experiences. It also shows that children were critical of how the professional system can ignore them.
